What happens to those who never hear the Gospel?

The same will happen to them that happens to all who never repent and turn to God. They will spend eternity in Hell. Paul tells us in Romans 1 that the law of God is in our heart, and that creation is evidence enough of a creator. The towering mountains and expansive deserts show that there is a majestic and almighty God. The Bible also tells us that all who seek after or try to find God will find Him. That means that 100% of people who truly look for God, will find Him. King Solomon said, “The fool says in his heart that there is no God.” We see the issue is not that people are unaware that there is a God, it is that they want to be God. God does not hide himself from people, but they try to hide themselves from him.

There is conjecture based on Genesis and recorded religious documents from South America to Egypt of people in history who seem to have come to know God, but we should understand that is conjecture only. One of my favorite people of faith is Hellen Keller. She went blind and deaf from a disease at the age of one. Once she learned to speak in sign language and escaped her life of isolation, she met with a bishop who wanted to tell her of God and the gospel. She told him that she already knew of God. She explained that she did not know His name, but in her loneliness, He was there. In her letters back and forth with this Bishop, she would eagerly ask him, “Tell me something that you know about God. I so wish to hear about my loving Father who is so good and wise.28” Hellen Keller shows us that ignorance cannot be used as an excuse for keeping you from God. She did not have sight or sound to witness to her, but she knew there was a God.

When we think of the lost who do not know our savior, it should be a call to action. Saying that “those who have never heard of Jesus are going to Hell,” is not a statement against God’s love, but against our love. It should move our hearts and minds to want to take the gospel everywhere. We should be proclaiming Jesus from lost friends to lost tribes. Romans 10:13-14 says, “For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?” Instead of telling God it is unfair that we have news that someone else does not have, we should see it as our obligation to get this news to them.

Jesus said that the path to Hell is wide. It is not wide because people do not know about Jesus. It is wide because people choose it, and prefer it over the narrow way to life. Jesus says He will take all who come to Him, and as we already said, all who search for Jesus will find Him. My atheist friend’s catchphrase is, “I do what I want.” Why is he not a Christian? Like many others, it is because they prefer to do what they want over what God wants. People do not go to Hell over ignorance of Jesus. They go to Hell for intentionally rejecting God and the truth that has been made clearly known and visible to us.

“For three things I thank God every day of my life: thanks that he has vouchsafed me knowledge of his works; deep thanks that he has set in my darkness the lamp of faith; deep, deepest thanks that I have another life to look forward to--a life joyous with light and flowers and Heavenly song.” ― Helen Keller
