What are Spiritual Gifts?

God calls us to be obedient to Him in all things. Like a Father to His child, God gives us the tools to do His will. God does not need us to serve Him, but allows us to do so. Being able to serve God is actually a gift. I think of when I was a kid pushing my plastic mower to help my dad in mowing the yard. I wasn’t much help, but dad still let me be part of it. I sometimes wonder if God’s fatherly love is similar to a mom or dad who lets their young child “help” them.

When we become Christians, God does not abandon us. His Spirit comes to dwell in us and guide us. His Spirit changes us and transforms us. As an apple tree grows apples, there are supposed to be fruits that grow from us as the Spirit resides in us. These are called the Fruits of the Spirit. These fruits are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. As we grow in Christ, the Spirit teaches us these things. In addition to the fruits, the Spirit also gives us what we call “Spiritual Gifts.” These are talents we are given for the purpose of helping others. Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12 lists these gifts. We are given these talents not for the purpose of helping ourselves. That would be selfish. Christians are supposed to be known and defined by their love for one another. The spiritual gifts that the Spirit gives us, is part of how we are able to fulfill it. God does not have to use us, but He chooses too. He uses us to accomplish His will, but He knows we are like children. As a loving Father, He equips us with His Spirit and the tools we need to accomplish His will.
